The heart has a home when it has an ally.
If Millie Crossan doesn’t know anything else, she knows this one truth simply because her brother Finley grew up beside her. Charismatic Finley, eighteen months her senior, becomes Millie’s guide when their mother Posey leaves their father and moves her children from Minnesota to Memphis shortly after Millie’s tenth birthday.
Memphis is a world foreign to Millie and Finley. This is the 1970’s Memphis, the genteel world of their mother’s upbringing and vastly different from anything they’ve ever known. Here they are the outsiders. Here, they only have each other. And here, as the years fold over themselves, they mature in a manicured Southern culture where they learn firsthand that much of what glitters isn’t gold. Nuance, tradition and Southern eccentrics flavor Millie and Finley’s world as they find their way to belonging.
But what hidden variables take their shared history to leave both brother and sister at such disparate ends?
Author Interview with Claire Fullerton
1. What made you want to become an author? Why this genre?
I didn’t so much aspire to being an author as get in touch with the fact that I am one. I’ve kept a journal all my life, and view the ins and outs of life as a story worth telling. The genre for Mourning Dove is upmarket Southern fiction, which bridges literary fiction with contemporary fiction. Literary fiction has a broad range, and in it an author can say something about how they view the world. I aim to ask questions in my novels about life choices, and this genre provides wonderful range.
2. What do you hope your readers take away from “Mourning Dove”?
The consideration of cause and effect as created through generational lines in a family dynamic. The idea that who we become in life starts from the foundation of our family.
3. Did you have any particular inspiration for your characters in “Mourning Dove”?
The characters in Mourning Dove are each telling of one Southern nuance or another. They are composites of Southern culture played out in individual form.
4. Do you use any playlists of music to help inspire you?
No, when I write I remain undistracted.
5. If someone wanted to write a novel how do you recommend they start?
By being certain they have a good story. It begins there. Next is ascertaining what you’re trying to say. I think a writer should go into a novel understanding the novel’s point, then every character and scene is geared toward supporting that point. I view the writing of a novel similar to working a puzzle. All pieces have to fit into the bigger picture.
